When it comes to achieving an effective weight loss regimen, the presence of a positive mental attitude has never been more important.
You can do absolutely anything if you choose to believe in yourself and your capabilities.
By holding onto negative thoughts and self talk, you’re holding yourself back from being able to achieve real weight loss success.
How many times have you let that little voice in your head tell you that you couldn’t do something?
Maybe you see yourself as fat and hate yourself for having gained so much weight.
And maybe, just maybe, you don’t see how your body can be any other way but fat.
That’s one huge mental obstacle to get over and something which is going to prevent you from truly tackling your weight problem.
Now let’s switch it up a little bit. Put yourself in the mindset of a positive thinker. Imagine yourself looking slim and toned. Say to yourself that you WILL lose 20lbs by this time next year and create a plan to get you there.
You’ll find the more times you say that to yourself and follow through with your actions, the more confident you will start to feel about your ability to accomplish your goals. Your weight loss journey will become easier because you’ve made a conscious decision to make things happen.
Your attitude and mindset can make a huge impact on whether or not you achieve effective weight loss.
Below are a couple of techniques which will help you to develop a more positive mindset.
Do keep in mind though that it takes time to replace negative thought patterns with positive ones, so don’t expect any miracles overnight. If you’re patient and work to introduce these changes into your life slowly, you will surely start to see a positive difference in your life.
1) Understand the reason behind the desire for weight loss
Why do you want to lose weight at this point in time?
What’s the one thing that is driving you to lose weight?
Is it because you are sick and tired of people talking about your weight in a disapproving way, or is it because you feel your weight is the reason why no one wants to date you or is it simply because you have a big event coming up and you want to look hotter than your best friend?
Explore your reasons and write them down on a piece of paper or in a journal. It really doesn’t matter whether or not you think your reasons are silly or too personal, write them down anyway.
Put the piece of paper or journal in a prominent place in your home, somewhere you can see it and be reminded of your reasons on a daily basis. You might even find that a couple of Post-It-Notes attached to the fridge or kitchen cupboards will do the trick for you.
After all if food is your comforter during difficult times, you’ll have your reasons for losing weight smack bang in front of you as a gentle reminder of what you want to achieve.
2) Get motivated by setting some realistic goals
OK so you know what the driving force behind your weight loss is; now it’s time to set a few goals for yourself.
Your first course of action is to find out what your basal metabolic rate is. This will give you an indication of how many calories you burn daily according to your height and weight. You can do this very easily and quickly with an online weight loss calculator.

Now you should have a rough idea of the amount of body weight you need to lose in order to kick start your weight loss regimen.
Realistically, don‘t expect to lose more than 2lbs a week. Work out how many pounds you would feel comfortable losing over a one year period.
Be sensible though, this goal has to be realistic in order for your regimen to be successful.
If you’re gunning for a super model body by this time next month and you currently weight over 150lbs… It’s probably not going to happen. So don’t set yourself up for failure.
Right then! Your goals have been set; all you need to do next is find a way to motivate yourself to keep on track. The best way to do this is to draw upon the reasons as to why you want to lose weight in the first place.
So taking the example of wanting to attract the attention of a potential mate, you may picture what you would wear whilst on a date with that person. Imagine receiving compliments on the way you look and take enjoyment from that feeling.
An effective weight loss plan is only as good as the action you choose to take.
It’s not an easy ride but if you can keep your mind focused on the positives, you will certainly have a better chance of losing weight successfully.
